I’m SO PROUD of my mom! For the last few weeks, I have been meeting my mom on “Zoom” to give her private art lessons. We have been working one-on-one with gouache paints and paper. (Gouache is an opaque water color paint.)
Here’s a picture my mom took of me from her dining room table while I was teaching:
I gave her a simple template for a limited palette that she could fill in as a way to understand her paints.
In preparation for the paintings, I gave my mom an assignment to do a series of pencil sketches of small bouquets of flowers. I showed her some of Bonnard’s pencil sketches as inspiration.
My mom turned out a series of the most gorgeous little pencil drawings! She has true natural talent! These drawings are so expressive, so intimate, and so full of life. I especially love the variation in line and the different values and energies she conveys by changing the pressure of her pencil on the paper. They are tender, delicate, bold, and vivacious!
My mom bravely jumped right into painting with gouache without much hesitation. Soon she was painting with confidence and trying new things. She was the best student I could have imagined; it was a delight to teach her!
I’ll leave you with this glorious painting of wildflowers in a small round vase. It makes my heart sing!
